CSK struggling without Dhoni — find out when ‘Mahi’ will return

Chennai: In the coming days, MS Dhoni will face a fitness assessment before Saturday’s key IPL game in Chennai. Trouble struck during preseason training – a calf injury kept him out of the past three games. Once the leader of Chennai Super Kings, he’s been sidelined since then.

Fitness test results will decide if Dhoni takes the field against Delhi Capitals, even though he is back training with the squad. Only after that assessment clears him does the question of selection resurface. The final word comes hours before the first ball is bowled.

He is forty four and still no appearance in any match this IPL season, also absent during team travel for away fixtures. His absence sat clearly visible when CSK hosted Punjab Kings at Chepauk. Those around the setup mention he turns up regularly at training sessions. But come game time, he remains distant from play – rules keep him outside the ground.

Fresh hints of improvement appear for CSK as Dewald Brevis nears a return. Early setbacks hit when the South African batter tore a muscle during practice, just before the season began.

Though Brevis traveled to Guwahati and Bengaluru with the team for the match against Royal Challengers, he didn’t make it into the playing eleven – full fitness still missing at that point.

Following CSK’s loss to RCB, head coach Stephen Fleming expressed optimism about Brevis’ recovery. “We expect him to be fully fit for the next match. We have a five-day gap between games, so we’ve taken a cautious approach. Hopefully, things progress as planned and he will be ready to play,” Fleming said.
