WPL 2024: MI’s Bowling Might Proves Too Hot to Handle for Gujarat Giants

In T20 cricket, coaches and analysts often say, “Batters win matches, bowlers win championships.” This means that while batters (the ones who hit the ball) may win individual games, it’s the bowlers (the ones who throw the ball) who help teams win big tournaments.

At Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Mumbai Indians (MI), who are the reigning champions of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), showed that they have a strong bowling team. They still have a lot of games to play before they can try to win the title again, but their bowling attack looks very good.

Before this season started, MI already had a good mix of young and experienced bowlers who worked well together to help their team win most of their matches. During the player auction, they decided to add more experience to their bowling squad by bringing in Shabnim Ismail from South Africa.

Before the first game of the season, MI’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, talked about how important it was to have Ismail on the team. She said that Ismail is a great player who has done well for her country and in other leagues. Ismail can bowl fast, which is something MI was looking for. Last year, another bowler named Issy Wong helped them a lot, and now they have Ismail as another good option. Having Ismail on the team gives them more strength in bowling.

In the game on Sunday, Ismail showed why she was a valuable addition to the team. She bowled well in the early part of the game, getting two important players from the Gujarat Giants team out early with her deliveries. They hit the batswomen’s pads and were close enough to the wickets for them to be sent off the field.

This shows that having a strong bowling team is important in cricket, especially in T20 matches where every run matters. MI’s decision to strengthen their bowling squad seems to be paying off already.
